"It never tastes as bad as it looks," that`s my new credo on food in Japan, some words to live by if you must.

So I have something to say about the food in Japan, almost an apology to the Japanese. Before I came to Japan I expected the food to be horrible. as it turns out it is fairly good. I am not gonna go out on a limb and say it`s excellent, but my expectations were so low that it tastes good, meaning that it is edible. The worst thing is the hachi (chopsticks), they are still hard to use after weeks of practice. the Japanese always clean out their bowls of rice, by picking out the last bits one by one.... I have trouble with chunks of rice, much less little specks of white rice. Rice is the side dish of every meal in Japan, sometimes they skip it at breakfast, but I can easily say I have had enough rice already. They don`t do any flavors with their rice, so when I come back to America I won`t have any major aversion to rice, because we all know the folks in the Western Hemisphere enjoy piling spices and basically anything with fat and calories onto our side dishes. In Japan there isn`t too much flavoring. Soy is very delicious on a lot of things though, especially eggs. I didn`t expect to eat a whole lot Japan, but in fact I am eating more than I have eaten in my whole life. The whole soccer situation cancels out my food intake though. I definitely can`t say I am getting skinnier though. And coming back to food, the raw fish that I kind of "offended" back in America by saying it actually made me gag, well in Japan it is actually good. They have these Sushi bars with revolving conveyor belts that have the food on it, you pick up a plate, and each plate has a different design based on price. it is awesome, because you just take what you like from right next to you, and you can get a little bit of everything. Ramen here, isn`t just flavored noodles, oh no, it`s soup with noodles, and an actual piece of meat mixed in as well. Mcdonalds actually tastes better in Japan, because the people who work there take pride in their jobs, and the food is much less greasy. That`s about all on food for now.

The bento is the Japanese form of the packed lunch. They do a much better job at it, I must say. They find a way to keep it tasty, even though they don`t refrigerate it in anyway. The only complaint I have about them is that there is way too much of the white rice, and not enough meat. This is common with any meal in Japan.
